Alabama Senate begins debate on bill that would ban nearly all abortions

April FrancisMay 16, 2019

While Democrats attempted to lessen the law's blow, by advocating for the exemption of rape and incest victims within the law, their motion failed via an 11-21 vote.

The legislation bans abortions at every stage of pregnancy and criminalizes the procedure for doctors, who could be charged with felonies and face up to 99 years in prison. Four Republicans voted for the rape and incest exception. The bill, which bans all abortions except for those deemed truly necessary to save the life of the mother, now awaits Republican Gov. Kay Ivey's signature. In the first quarter of 2019, at least 28 state legislatures introduced some kind of abortion ban.

The bill does not make any other exceptions for women and girls who fall pregnant, including in cases of rape or incest. Abortion-rights supporters say the legislation is unconstitutional.

If a new MS law survives a court challenge, it will be almost impossible for most pregnant women to get an abortion there. The Avengers: Endgame star, who has made no secret of his disdain for Donald Trump, also said these restrictions would put Roe v. Wade at risk and urged his fans to vote.

In recent years, conservative states have passed laws that have chipped away at the right to abortion with stricter regulations, including time limits, waiting periods and medical requirements on doctors and clinics.

The legislators of the State of Alabama take an oath to (amongst other things) "support the Constitution of the United States" - not to support the Constitution as it is egregiously misinterpreted, as happened in Roe and Casey, by a majority of the lawyers on the U.S. Supreme Court.

Such a scenario would spell the end of Roe v. Wade, the 1973 ruling that established that a woman's constitutionally protected right to privacy included whether or not to have an abortion before a fetus is viable outside the womb, usually about 24 weeks into a pregnancy.

May's government hopes that Britons elected to the European Parliament will not need to take their seats, still wanting to get a divorce deal passed by parliament before the end of June.

Republican Senator Clyde Chambliss, arguing in favor of the Alabama bill, said the whole point was "so that we can go directly to the Supreme Court to challenge Roe versus Wade". The Alabama bill is in direct conflict with Roe, and its author has been clear from the beginning that her goal is to use its passage as an opportunity to get the Supreme Court to overturn Roe.

"It is important that we pass this statewide abortion ban legislation and begin a long overdue effort to directly challenge Roe v. Wade", Alabama Lieutenant Gov.

Of the 27 Republicans, all white men, that dominate the 35-seat Alabama senate, 25 voted to pass the bill on Tuesday local time. Well, the laws are different for each state, but in Alabama specifically, Ivey has six days to make a decision on the bill.

Leana Wen, the president of Planned Parenthood, said: "At Planned Parenthood we will do whatever it takes to stop these risky bans so that our patients can continue to access the care they need, ". Similar bans gained traction after the confirmation of the conservative-leaning supreme court justice Brett Kavanaugh in October.

The bill's legality, however, would not be ensured since it is likely to face stringent challenges at the judicial level.

Planned Parenthood and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) said they will file a lawsuit against the Alabama ban, which would not take effect for at least six months.
